Introduction

Extended Skills Posts are an optional component of the GP Training Program and are designed to enable GP Registrars to focus on their personal strengths and weakness or undertake special training that is relevant to General Practice.

When can I do Extended Skills?

WentWest's preference is for all Registrars to undertake Extended Skills Training, either before their GPT1 term or after their GPT2 term.  It is our aim that Registrars experience continuity within their GP Training.  Many skills learned during GPT1 are cemented within the GPT2 term.

How long can I spend doing Extended Skills?

Extended skills can be a minimum of 13 weeks and up to a maximum of 26 weeks of training. The time completed during this post will reduce the required subsequent GP experience time by the equivalent amount.

Approval of Extended Skills

All Extended Skills Posts require PROSPECTIVE approval by your Medical Educator and Director of Training. All applications must be received no less then 3 months prior to the post commencing.

It is the GP Registrar's responsibility to research and organise their own Extended Skills posts.

An Extended Skills Application (OF321) must be completed. This application requires you to outline the nature of the post that you plan to undertake and the details of the medical practitioner who will be supervising your training during this time.

A Learning Plan must be completed an attached to your application outlining your key learning objectives and how you believe undertaking this post will better equip you or support your General Practice training.

Approval will not be granted if:

  • There is inadequate supervision;
  • The position is considered inappropriate for General Practice Training;
  • The position is considered to be inappropriate to the GP Registrar's training needs;
  • The GP Registrar has previously completed 6 or more months in a similar post.

Requirements during your Extended Skills Post

Like any GP Term, you are required to remain in contact with WentWest and your Medical Educator. A Training Advice (TA) Contact will need to be completed and is recommenced mid-way through the post to ensure the post is meeting the agreed learning objectives.

Completion of your Extended Skills Post

To show completion of your Extended Skills Post you will need to submit a hospital assessment or equivalent to document your performance during the post. Satisfactory completion of the post is documented in your records once the time component is completed and assessment have been received.
